Rivington to Parbold – 30 miles
Ascent 2,739ft
Stages 12 to 7 (S12 to S7).
A long hard day with lots of canal towpath walking. I was tempted by several shortcuts but managed to stick to the route proper the whole day. There were several possible shortcuts
- Straight from Rivington across to Adlington
- Miss out Haigh Hall and continue along the canal to Top Lock
- At Gathurst continue along the canal towards Parbold and pick up Stage 6 at Bridge 40 just before the climb up to Parbold Hill.
- On the descent from the Ashurst’s Beacon miss out the section to Newburgh and continue straight down the hill to Bridge 40 on the Leeds Liverpool canal
I live in Parbold so could walk home at the end of the day. It was a long 10 minutes walk at the end of the day.
Again the photos do not do this day justice! Too focused on finishing the day!
First stop was Frederick’s Ice cream parlour. I can never resist.
The “top lock” at the top of the flight of 23 locks, which descend into the Douglas valley and the town of Wigan.
Looking back over the Douglas valley on the climb up to Ashurst’s Beacon near Dalton.
